Last summer I took a few days away in the north of Italy, staying in the beautiful little town of Orta San Giulio on the shore of Lago di Orta. Not as well known as the larger (and considerably busier), Lakes Como and Garda, Orta feels like a secret, hidden gem.
How perfect then, that on the first night there, the town piazza was the setting for an evening of open air cinema. Cinema Paradiso! A couple of days later I was looking in a back street shop and found an archive photo of the same square, playing host to a ‘Cinemagrafico’ from the early 20th century.
Add to this the discovery of a fantastic, back street trattoria, serving homemade Bagna Calda and the finest local Barbera wine and cue a very happy man…
